Snippet Four

Sierra woke up with a whopping headache. She stared up at the sky. It was streaked with pink, orange, and purple. Black was creeping up from the horizon.

Where am I? Sierra struggled to sit up. Her head throbbed, and she winced as she felt a goose-egg-sized lump.

Why am I in the forest? Sierra’s brow furrowed when it all came rushing back to her. Her birthday. The smoke. Falling out of the tree. She carefully moved her limbs. Nothing seemed broken. She stood, none the worse for the wear, save for a couple bruises.

Smoke. Where had it been coming from?

Sierra broke into a run toward the direction of her house. Her parents would be worried sick. She burst into the clearing and froze. She looked at the scene before her, unsure if she was dreaming or if she had gotten lost.

Before her was the smoking ruins of a once-cozy cottage. Sierra’s jaw dropped as she walked forward, unable to comprehend what she was looking at.

Is this my home? Had it been only this morning that she had woken up, excited about her day. Tears stung the back of her eyes as she walked around the house. What had happened? A sob caught in her throat.

She saw three mounds on the front lawn. She swallowed the sob and approached the mounds. At each mound, there was a stone. She read the names of her father, her mother…. and herself. She threw herself down on the ground, choking, heart-wrenching sobs raking through her body.

She cried until she ran out of tears. She sat there, the sky black as pitch with only a few stars. Her eyelids fluttered shut, tired from the uncontrollable crying.
